Backpacking trip to Hampi: My Solo Adventure
When I decided to take a solo trip to Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, India, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard about the ancient temples and ruins, but I had no idea just how much this trip would change me.
I arrived in Hampi on a hot and sunny day, and immediately felt the energy of the place. The town is small and compact, with a laid-back atmosphere that made it easy for me to navigate. After checking into my guesthouse, I set out to explore the town.
One of the first things I did was to visit the Virupaksha Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is considered to be one of the most important temples in Hampi and is an architectural marvel. I was amazed by the intricate carvings and sculptures that adorned the temple walls. I also appreciated the peaceful atmosphere of the temple, which was a perfect place to sit and reflect.
Another highlight of my trip was visiting the Royal Enclosure, the former residence of the Vijayanagara kings. I was struck by the grandeur of the place and the intricate details of the buildings. I also enjoyed visiting the Queen's Bath, a beautiful bathhouse that was used by the royal ladies.
I also visited some of the lesser-known temples and ruins in Hampi, which were just as impressive as the more popular sights. I was particularly struck by the Vittala Temple, an ancient temple known for its stunning stone chariot and the musical pillars. The temple is a perfect example of the architectural skills of the Vijayanagara kings.
Another highlight of my trip was visiting the Hippie Island, also known as the "Hippie Island Gudigar" located on the northern side of the Tungabhadra river. The island is a bohemian paradise, known for its colorful houses, graffiti art, and laid-back vibe. I enjoyed strolling around the island, admiring the street art, and chatting with the local hippies. The island has a variety of small cafes and restaurants where I enjoyed some delicious local food and drinks. The island also has a beautiful beach where I spent some time relaxing and swimming. The island is a perfect place to escape the crowds and experience a more alternative side of Hampi.
As the days passed, I found myself becoming more and more enamored with Hampi. I enjoyed the company of locals and other travelers, and I felt like I was part of the community. I also had the opportunity to try some delicious local food, such as Dosa and Idli.
One of the most memorable moments of my trip was watching the sunset over the Tungabhadra River. The sun casting its orange and pink hues over the river and the ancient ruins was a sight to behold.
In conclusion, my solo trip to Hampi was one of the most meaningful and fulfilling experiences of my life. The ancient temples and ruins, the laid-back atmosphere, and the friendly locals all combined to make this trip unforgettable. Hampi is a perfect destination for those who are looking for a mix of history, culture, and adventure. I would highly recommend visiting this place, and if possible, take a solo trip to truly experience the magic of Hampi.
